Stanley Miller and Harold Urey demonstrated that organic molecules can be synthesized under prebiotic conditions. Thomas Cech and Sidney Altman discovered that RNA can have enzymatic activities.

For this discovery, they shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
